Petrol Price in Pakistan
The price of fuel in Pakistan has gone up once again, but this time, it’s gone up to such an extent that it will definitely impact most households in Pakistan. The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (OGRA) has increased the prices of MS and HSD petrol for the next 24 hours, on the instructions of the federal government, and the prices have gone up from their previous figures.
Here are some detailed facts about the current price of petrol in Pakistan, its rise, and its future.
New Petrol and Diesel Prices
Under the latest revision, the price of petrol has climbed by Rs. 5.77, pushing it up to Rs. 331.2 per litre. Diesel saw an even steeper jump, rising by Rs. 6.47 to reach Rs. 390.42 per litre. These new rates came into effect from Tuesday and will remain applicable for the standard 24-hour window before the next review.
This increase comes right after a period of relative stability. On Thursday, just before this hike, petrol was sitting at Rs. 325.43 per litre and diesel at Rs. 383.95 per litre β both figures unchanged from the day before.
A Quick Look at the Daily Price Pattern
Since Pakistan moved to a daily fuel price adjustment system, the swings have been frequent, sometimes moving up, sometimes down, but the overall trajectory over the past several weeks has leaned upward. Comparing today’s rate to where things stood at the very start of daily revisions, petrol is up by roughly Rs. 18.9 per litre, while diesel has climbed by an even more noticeable Rs. 60.91 per litre.

Looking at this table, it’s clear that the sharpest jump happened right when the government shifted from weekly to daily price reviews in mid-July. Since then, both petrol and diesel have mostly stayed on an upward path, with only brief dips along the way.
Why Does the Petrol Price in Pakistan Keep Changing?
These revisions are normally influenced by several considerations, including:
- International oil prices: Pakistan imports most of its fuel products; hence, any change in international crude oil prices will have an immediate impact on their prices.
- Exchange rate of Rupee to US dollar: As mentioned earlier, fuel prices are in dollars; hence, a weak Rupee will translate to high prices for imported goods.
- Taxes and levies from the government: Petroleum Levy and General Sales Tax are some of the largest components in the price; hence, any increase in these will lead to higher prices irrespective of any changes in international prices.
- Daily price review process: As the name suggests, the daily price revision process introduced in Pakistan has reduced the time taken between revisions; thus, changes in price are seen almost every day compared to before when they took two weeks to reflect.
What This Means for the Common Man
But for a typical family, it is not merely about spending more at the fuel station. Diesel is actually much more integral to our economy than many would think because it drives trucks, buses, tractors, and generators. And now, when diesel is more than Rs. 60 per litre higher than just a few weeks ago, transport costs have risen, which naturally affects the prices of vegetables, grocery items, and practically all goods transported from elsewhere.
Petrol, on the other hand, hits commuters and private vehicle owners most directly. With petrol now above Rs. 330 per litre, daily commuting costs for bike and car owners have gone up noticeably compared to just a month ago.
How Often Do Petrol Prices Change in Pakistan?
Since the shift to a daily pricing model, OGRA reviews and announces new rates for petrol and diesel every 24 hours, except on public holidays when the previous day’s rate typically carries over. This is a departure from the older system, where prices were revised once every two weeks.
